Current Projects

As part of Newtown Project management contract working on redesign for a number of Johannesburg arts buildings, including Market Theatre (www.markettheatre.co.za) Museum Africa, Newtown Music Hall, Dance Factory, Bus Factory (with Brian Debnam).

Developing outline concept and design for the Wits Cultural Precinct as part of the implementation plan for the Wits Spatial Development framework.

Developing concepts for the Statue of Freedom in Port Elizabeth incorporating a Long Walk to Freedom and a range of associated cultural facilities. Developing brief for international competitions (with GAPP architects).

Developed concepts for the Statue of Freedom in Port Elizabeth incorporating a Long Walk to Freedom and a range of associated cultural facilities. Subsequently developed brief for national design competition (with GAPP architects) and project managed competition to announcement of winner by Justice Albie Sachs – the chair of the judging panel (www.thefreedomstatue.co.za).



Previous projects

Chaired the partners side of the design process, selecting and then working with architects from Norman Foster, from “blank sheets of paper” to the final design of The Sage Gateshead (1996 – 2000).

Conducted design review on Baltic (with David Powell) and was a judge on the design competition for the Millennium Bridge (1995 – 97).

Designed the conversion of South Hill Park from a sixty room Edwardian country house to a thriving Community Arts Centre for a Newtown (1972/4).

Numerous consultancies and design reviews on arts buildings and the development of the concept of a National Arts Space Register (with Roger Lancaster) acting as a ready reference for all those contemplating new spaces for the arts (1998 – 2003).
