The review and original design of cultural organisations and institutions

Current Projects

As Founding Director of the Centre for Cultural Policy and Management at Northumbria University (1998 – 2004) , created an applied research centre in the heart of the Newcastle/Gateshead Cultural Quarter and a purpose-renovated base (shared with the National Trust) at Holy Jesus Hospital (1681) providing a home for a mixture of University Research, Regional and National Cultural Agencies and a small cultural business start up “incubator”.

In the same role, negotiated the creation of a sister centre with the University of the Witwatersrand at the Wits School of Arts (www.wits.ac.za/artworks) with a base on the Johannesburg Cultural Arc.

Appointed as “Principal” in Culture and Regeneration by Ziefle Consultancy Management in 2003. A partner in the design and development of this new company.

As part of the Strategic Spatial and Implementation Framework for the Mandela Bay Development Agency – developed options analysis for management of Cultural Institutions in the municipality.

Supported Brian Debnam in the development of the successor institution – a City Improvement District -  for the JDA in Newtown.



Previous Projects

Reviewed the future of the arts and arts education at Dartington Hall www.dartingtonhall.com and College (www.dartington.ac.uk) with Chris Bailey resulting in new annual funding of £750,000 from the Arts Council (2001/3).

Reviewed (working closely with David Powell Associates - www.dpa-ltd.co.uk) - the structures and budgets for the Baltic, and managed the development process through to the appointment of the first Director.

Acted as Project Co-ordinator for the Regional Music Centre (now The Sage Gateshead (www.thesagegateshead.com), leading the development process and the production of applications by Gateshead Council with its three partners – the Northern Sinfonia (John Summers), Folkworks (Alistair Anderson and Ros Rigby), Northern Arts (Brian Debnam).

As Development Director (1992/94) produced development strategy and raised initial three years of funding to “found” the Voluntary Arts Network (www.voluntaryarts.org) as a UK-wide “voice” for the participatory and amateur arts.

Created the first “incorporated” Regional Arts Board with ground breaking new structures and programmes and played a full national role in structural reform of the arts funding system (1982 – 92).

As Founding Director (1972-77), developed all the management structures for South Hill Park (www.southhillpark.com) – then the largest Community Arts Centre in the UK.

Worked for twenty years – as the first administrator and then as a (voluntary) Board Member with Welfare State International (www.welfare-state.org).

Advisory Board member for Dodgy Clutch Theatre Company and DC Events (www.dodgyclutch.com).
